CORDOVA CENTENNIAL - 2008

Cordova - Alaska's Hidden Treasure will celebrate it's Centennial in 2008. Planning for this momentous occasion is well under way, with many exciting events and activities under consideration to help recognize the significance of this milestone. Art projects, historical documentation, cultural exhibits, books, a DVD, downtown 4th of July celebration, centennial themes included in all other local festivals and events-- the list goes on. Please visit here for updates on the projects.

COME FLY WITH US ! ! !

On August 17th, 2008 Cordovans will commemorate early bush pilot "Mudhole" Smith's epic flights between Cordova and McCarthy on a fully restored Super DC3 aircraft.

The recreation will include a round trip flight from Cordova to McCarthy, lodging at the McCarthy Lodge, dinner, transportation to the Kennicott mine for a tour and several other activities before returning to Cordova on the 18th.

Passengers will receive a Cordova Centennial commemorative coin, a reproduction of the Cordova Airlines travel brochure of the era, and a reproduction of an authentic Cordova Airlines passenger ticket from the time period.

All flights will follow the original route of the Copper River & Northwestern Railroad through the Copper River Canyon. Seats are limited, please contact the Cordova Chamber of Commerce for more information.

Cordova is a uniquely Alaskan community, shaped by its dramatic natural setting, rich cultural heritage, and colorful residents. Cordova is a working town, nestled in the heart of a spectacular wilderness, that still looks to the ocean and forests for its livelihood.

Visit Cordova for the best of both worlds, the pleasures of a sophisticated small town and step-out-the-door access to adventure. Visitors from around the globe trek to Cordova to amble across the Million Dollar Bridge, enjoy the magnificent Childs Glacier up close, fish for salmon in the Copper River Delta, explore Orca Inlet, or be surrounded by tens of thousands of shorebirds at Hartney Bay. The town is the perfect compliment to the wilderness. It is a comfortable place to stroll, shop, visit a museum, or linger over a cup of coffee and admire the view of our busy harbor. click here to get a view from our harbor cam (provided by the Cordova Telephone Cooperative)

Cordova is easy to reach (but not too easy) and pleasantly off the path of Alaska Tourism. We are less than a one hour plane flight east from Anchorage, with daily jet service as well as regular ferry service . Designated as an "All American Road" in 2005, the Marine Highway links Cordova with the road systems in Alaska via the ports of Whittier or Valdez. For winter 2008 the Marine Highway implemented TWO substantial travel incentives - "Driver Goes Free" on any trip in the AMHS system, and a 30% discount for passengers and vehicles on any round trip booking between Cordova and Whittier or Valdez! See www.ferryalaska.com for details.

Now more accessible than ever, Cordova may not be for everyone, but if you're in love with wilderness, fascinated by history, attracted to unique places, and dedicated to adventure, Cordova is for you. click here for a current view from our ski hill cam (provided by the Cordova Telephone Cooperative)
