Strategically located between the iconic Copper River king and sockeye salmon fisheries and the abundant, hatchery-enhanced pink salmon fisheries of Prince William Sound, Trident’s two Cordova facilities enjoy a steady supply of high-quality, wild Alaska salmon from mid-May through September. Fresh sockeye and king salmon from the Copper River dominate production in May and early June. As sockeye, chum and pink salmon runs ramp up through the summer in Prince William Sound, H&G and frozen fillet production increases in both plants. Peak seasonal employment at the two plants is upwards of 500 workers. Cordova North focuses heavily on the production of traditional can-packed and skinless-boneless canned salmon. In addition to this unique form of canned product, Cordova North also produces large volumes of high-quality wild salmon oil for human health supplements. Together with hydrolysates for animal feed and organic fertilizers, Cordova’s product line highlights Trident’s continuing investments in new-product development and full utilization.

Salmon Jam is an annual cultural event that benefits the residents and visitors of Cordova and helps to make our community a place where people want to live year-round. Sustainable Alaskan fisheries, salmon ecology, and the importance of salmon to local economies are shared with festival-goers through hands-on activities, booths, displays, and is at the heart of the entire event. Not only do patrons enjoy the activities and guest musicians during Salmon Festival weekend, but Salmon Jam Music Festival is the annual fundraiser for Cordova Arts Council and proceeds from Salmon Jam help support year-round cultural and education activities in Cordova. These cultural activities make art available to our isolated community and educate Cordova youth, with artists offering special performances during the school day for all students.
A core of community partners meet year-round to plan and organize this event, which celebrates the wild Alaska salmon that are key to the diverse lifestyles of the Copper River region. Then, for two days a year (in July) an army of volunteers come together to make it happen!
Copper River Salmon Jam would not happen without the staff and resources of Copper River Watershed Project. Community partners like Prince William Sound Science Center, United States Forest Service, and Native Village of Eyak provide staff and materials to educate children and adults about the importance of salmon, their habitat, and our role as caretakers and consumers. Cordova District Fishermen United hosts an annual fillet demonstration, working with local processors to showcase the skills and speed of local fillet masters! Almost the entire event takes place at Mt. Eyak Ski Area, a beautiful multi-use property owned by the City of Cordova with seasonal operations provided by the non-profit Sheridan Alpine Association.
By contributing to this event (whether you are a “spawnsor“, volunteer, or patron), you will help to increase awareness about Copper River Salmon and make Cordova a more vibrant place with year-round art and cultural activities!

Seal is a 17 m / 56 foot expedition sailboat, built for Antarctic and Arctic conditions. Her hull, built to our specs in 2002, is metal (aluminium) for extra strength and she has a lifting keel and rudder allowing us to dry out completely and access shallow anchorages unavailable to deeper draft boats as well as being a big safety feature in accidental groundings. We worked closely with the designers Chuck Paine and Ed Joy to implement ideas gleaned from many years sailing on Skip Novak’s original “Pelagic” (which Hamish helped build and sail in 1987). One of the big changes we made was the raised saloon that allows one to have a view of the outside world while relaxing, eating, navigating or cooking. A central heating system with radiators and the 4” of foam insulation ensures it is both warm and dry below.
After five seasons in the Antarctic and South Georgia, we have been in Alaska since 2013. We are based in the winter in Cordova (Prince William Sound) and sail from there in the spring around the Sound and later in the summer out to the Kenai, Kodiak, Katmai and the vast network of islands comprising the Aleutians (Dutch Harbor to Adak and beyond).
Please contact us to discuss trips to any of the above places or any other places in Alaska you would like to visit by sailboat and we can plan expeditions to pretty much anywhere on the Alaskan coast whether you are interested in sailing, hiking, climbing, ski touring, photography, nature or all of the above! We can also run “Remote Cruising Workshops” if you are interested in a more learning based trip that has proved very popular.
