Join in the holiday fun at a new rendition of Cordova Chamber of Commerce’s Hometown Holiday Kick-off on November 30th, 2018. This year, the event will feature a live tree and take place in front of the Cordova Center on Main Street at 5pm.
Lovers of local holiday tradition will be happy to hear that this year’s event will still feature carols, hot chocolate, an appearance by Santa and a big beautifully decorated tree. But unlike in years past, this year’s tree will be living and firmly planted in the ground. After last year’s tree got blown down three times, we thought it might be good to find a more sustainable way to kick-off the holiday season. It also means one less tree being cut down and less fuel and energy to move and erect it. The tree will also be more centrally-located on Main Street this year, right between the Cordova Center and Pioneer Igloo.
Usually considered the official beginning of the holiday season in Cordova, the Chamber’s annual Holiday Kick-off and Tree Lighting is also the first night of Moonlight Madness, a festive Chamber program that encourages local residents to Shop Cordova First during the holiday season. Local businesses stay open late every Friday in December to give Cordovans more opportunity to do their holiday shopping in town. The Chamber circulates a list of participating businesses along with details on Moonlight Madness sales, treats and festive activities. This year, the event is going to a new level.
Passport to Fun!
This year, we wanted to make shopping local even more fun with Shop Cordova First Passports. Throughout the holiday season, you can get a stamp for each local retail purchase you make. Then turn it in to the Chamber by January 1st, and you could win a nice prize! For every $20 worth of local spending in your Passport, you’ll get an entry to win a $300 gift certificate from Points North Heli Adventures (have you seen their amazing puffy coats?!), dinner from the PNH chef out at Orca Lodge, a free family membership to Bidarki Recreation Center and Bob Korn Pool, a Shoreside Gift Certificate, or other prize! Shop Cordova First Passports will be distributed at the November 17th Saturday Market, the Holiday Kick-off on November 30th, and at the Bidarki Holiday Bazaar November 30th and December 1st.
